What Is NAPFA? The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors
NAPFA is the largest professional association of fee-only fiduciary financial advisors in the United States. Membership signals two specific commitments: compensation that comes only from clients, and a written annual oath to act in the client's best interest.
What NAPFA is
The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors was founded in 1983 with one goal: build a professional community of advisors paid only by their clients, free of the compensation-tied conflicts that dominated the financial-services industry at the time. NAPFA has grown into the largest such association in the U.S., with roughly 4,000 members across all 50 states.
What NAPFA membership requires
NAPFA members must:
- Be fee-only. No commissions, no 12b-1 fees, no referral fees from product issuers, no other third-party compensation tied to product sales.
- Sign an annual Fiduciary Oath committing to act in the client's best interest, fully disclose conflicts, and not accept compensation contingent on product sales.
- Hold the CFP certification (or an equivalent advanced credential) and meet ongoing continuing-education requirements.
- Submit a sample financial plan that's peer-reviewed during the application process.
Why NAPFA membership matters for consumers
For consumers, NAPFA membership is one of the strongest single signals that an advisor is operating under the fee-only fiduciary model. The peer-review and credentialing requirements raise the bar above what state regulators require. The annual fiduciary oath is renewable, which means an advisor can't simply attest once and forget — they re-affirm the commitment every year.
That said, NAPFA membership is one signal, not a substitute for your own due diligence. See how we verify advisors for a fuller checklist.
How to verify NAPFA membership
NAPFA publishes a free, public "Find an Advisor" search at napfa.org. Type the advisor's name; if they are a current member, their profile will appear. Membership status is canonical there — no third-party directory should be relied on as the final word.
NAPFA vs. other fee-only associations
NAPFA is the largest, but it isn't the only association of fee-only advisors. Others worth knowing:
- XY Planning Network — fee-only with a focus on Gen X/Y consumers and subscription pricing.
- Garrett Planning Network — fee-only with an hourly-billing focus.
- Alliance of Comprehensive Planners — fee-only, retainer-based, tax-focused.
Many advisors hold multiple memberships. Membership in any of these associations indicates fee-only compensation; the differences are in scope and target audience.
NAPFA membership and Arizona Fee Only
Arizona Fee Only is an independent directory; we are not affiliated with NAPFA. We verify advisors against the same core criteria NAPFA does — fee-only compensation and fiduciary standard — but we do not require NAPFA membership for listing. Some Arizona Fee Only advisors are NAPFA members; others meet the same requirements without holding NAPFA membership.
Frequently asked questions
What does NAPFA stand for?
NAPFA stands for the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors. It's the largest professional association of fee-only fiduciary financial advisors in the United States.
Are all NAPFA members fee-only?
Yes. Fee-only compensation is a non-negotiable membership requirement. Members may not accept commissions, 12b-1 fees, referral fees from product issuers, or any other third-party compensation tied to product sales.
Do NAPFA members have to be fiduciaries?
Yes. NAPFA members sign an annual Fiduciary Oath committing to act in the client's best interest at all times — not just on advisory accounts.
How can I verify NAPFA membership?
NAPFA maintains a public 'Find an Advisor' search at napfa.org. Membership status is also published on each member's NAPFA profile page. If an advisor claims NAPFA membership, you can verify it free in under a minute.
Is NAPFA membership the same as being a CFP?
No. The CFP certification is a credential issued by the CFP Board. NAPFA is a membership association. Many NAPFA members hold CFP certifications, but they're separate. NAPFA's compensation requirements are stricter than the CFP Board's.
